QUESTIONS were asked following two defeats on the trot, but the team has responded in fine fashion with excellent victories against Rochdale and Bradford City.

If we could play all of our games away from home, I’m sure we could already be dusting out the old trophy cabinet.

Of course, half of them have to be played at Vale Park, so we need to rack up a few home wins to convince the masses that the Valiants really mean business this season.

At Bradford, it was the same old story away from home.

We looked the better side, were very hard to break down and always looked liable to score.

The Richards boys – Marc and Justin – are proving to be quite a handful, but I thought the star man at Valley Parade was Gary Roberts.

It’s a long time since the Vale have had a midfield performer of his calibre, and it could be worth extending his stay until the end of the season now, because other clubs are bound to be chasing him as January nears.

I know it’s early days, but you can understand people getting a bit excited about our prospects for this season.

In the week that TV bade farewell to The Bill, Vale announced that their own Bill, club chairman Bill Bratt, will be giving up the club chief executive’s role.

Since a Bridgeport, Conn., bank announced it will buy Bank of Smithtown – a linchpin in the Long Island banking community for 100 years – the head honchos at local financial institutions are hoping to eat up some of the customers that may become casualties of the merger.

The CEOs stopped short of disclosing their entire marketing campaigns aimed at capturing current Bank of Smithtown customers, but emphasized that in any merger a good number of people may be displaced as online banking platforms are altered, brand name recognition disappears and services differ.

Joe Perri, chief executive of Gold Coast Bank, noted that Long Islanders are particularly loyal to homegrown community banks, which could also add to the displacement.

“The homespun feeling is gone,” Perri said of the effects of the upcoming acquisition by People’s United Financial, which is scheduled to close at the end of the year.

Brent Di Giorgio, a spokesman for People’s United, said it is too early to tell what the majority of changes to Bank of Smithtown will be. He has previously said there will be little change in customer- facing employees – tellers and the like – and said decisions on the changes to higher-up administrators will happen at a later point. The signs bearing the name “Bank of Smithtown” will be dismantled and replaced with “People’s United Bank” at the end of the year when the merger becomes final.

Once the name is gone, the tumult begins, said Tom O’Brien, CEO of the Jericho-based State Bank of Long Island. Leading up to the name change and official closing, there may be a smaller amount of customer dislocation, he said. O’Brien said he may run advertisements in a variety of media leading up to the closing and immediately following it, but emphasized that he will not paint People’s United Financial in a negative light in the spots.

Perri said he is “absolutely” planning to gobble up some of the doomed bank’s market share, and did not rule out the possibility of eventually opening a Smithtown-based branch.

He said now banks are banned from opening a branch in Smithtown proper because the Bank of Smithtown had “home office protection” there, even though the institution is headquartered in Hauppauge. But, since People’s United Financial has bought out Bank of Smithtown and because it’s no longer an independent institution, the floodgates for other banks to get into the market have opened. There could be valuable municipal and business accounts to be had in the area, Perri said.

The home-office protection law prohibits other banks from opening within a certain radius of an independent bank, Perri explained, noting that the First National Bank of Long Island has such an advantage in Glen Head
